In the Seattle airport, down the concourse from the boys in the "Layover" painting, I spotted another scene of interest to me.  In the foreground sat a lovely, young woman of indigenous heritage, mostly asleep.  The composition was designed to pull the viewer's eye into the distance via the angle of the chairs lining the windows, pause by a teenage girl leaning on one of those chairs looking onto the tarmac, left to two elderly travelers and, finally, back to the foreground to the warmth and calm of the sleeping subject.  To me, her features, dress and posture suggested modern day American assimilation.

She appeared to have the bone structure of a race of people who were once predominant in that part of the continent.  The "bloodline" idea that had surfaced while photographing the "Layover" boys was fresh in my mind when I saw this young woman, my thoughts turning to her ancestry and the generational changes that must've taken place over a relatively short period of time.  We see her here in a busy American airport wearing casual, contemporary clothing, relaxed and actually sleeping ... totally at home with her surroundings.  Her great grandfather was most likely not so relaxed in the company of those outside his tribe.

Cultural movement has always been a subject of interest to me.  This scene demonstrates that human evolution can take place in ways other than at the cellular level.  The rate of that evolution seems to be relative to any given society's willingness to prize such things.  This painting is a tribute to those who risk it all to lead us toward social harmony.
