While I eventually morphed into a figurative oil painter in the early '90s, my earlier life was spent working as a theatre actor. I was formally trained in both disciplines. A few years ago, I stumbled onto an opportunity to rekindle those acting skills by offering to narrate a colleague's newly-written memoir. Shortly after completing that project, I signed on with ACX.com, an arm of Audible.com. ACX is a clearinghouse of sorts where authors can connect with narrators worldwide to create audiobooks. The author uploads a segment from their new book. Narrators choose from those listings, then prepare and upload a sample audio file based on that material. The authors then choose whom they want from those submissions to hire for the project. Contracts are signed through ACX and the recording begins. Once the audiobook is complete, ACX produces the CDs which are then put up for sale on Audible.com, Amazon.com and iTunes. After first joinng ACX, I submitted six audition pieces. The reply from JT Kalnay, author of this new novel (his 17th) "The Topsail Trek", was immediate. The message read, "You nailed it!" Beginner's luck, I guess. And so the agreement was finalized and my work began. It is a 386-page work of fiction. It is unique in the sense that the story is told exclusively by its characters. There is no narration. It is entirely enacted. I've not yet counted the number of characters in this beautifully-written story, but there are dozens, including a character that is "The Atlantic" who describes events in Gillian's life from the omnipotent viewpoint of the ocean. This audiobook is estimated to be about 14 hours. I have a few more months of recording yet to go, then I will master the files and upload them to ACX for final engineering approval. There is little I can do to share this amazing experience with you except post an excerpt now and then, which will be noted on my homepage. It is my hope that you'll be intrigued enough to purchase this CD bundle when it comes out. Thanks for taking a few minutes out of your day to check in. I appreciate your interest and support. | |
