This is one of those rare occasions where I allowed the subject to speak. In other words, my intent is not evident, even subtlely, in the resulting image. So why bother? This was our model for a group session. He very patiently sat for all of us while we worked at our easels. It so happened that the music our host was playing in the studio was the score from Ken Burns' Civil War documentary. As the hours passed, the lively and scratchy recordings from long ago filled the void between the sound of brushes on canvas. Rick's expression seemed to change. It was subtle, but reminiscent of an actor preparing to play the role of Othello. In an attempt to isolate that intense resolve in his face, I painted the background flat, trying to draw the viewer to his expression, rather than putting his body in the context of a specific, spacial environment. In other words, I was experiementing with an expressionistic version of the subject, attempting to capture his intent, not mine. I don't know how successful I was. What do you think? It's uncharted territory for me, but I felt as though the act of reaching for a higher plane was worth the effort to evolve as an artist. | |
