"Downtown Uptime" Oil on canvas, 16" x 20" $500 (US customers only) PURCHASE INFO |
This was one of those odd 70 degree November days in downtown Minneapolis. Minnesotans begin to brace themselves for winter when the snows start to fly in October. When a sunny, mild day comes along so late in the season, we flock outside like vampires to soak up whatever might remain of the year's warmth. It happened to be a business day. The downtown workers, local residents, groggy reptiles and anything else that had a pulse amassed in Peavey Plaza across from Orchestra Hall and the WCCO studios, sitting on what would normally have been icy, bone-chilling concrete steps. In Minnesota, warmth is a state of mind. It directly relates to mood as if winter represented the dark side of the human spirit. There is potential when one is not focused on survival alone. One aspect of the image that intrigued me was the man in the foreground. He was alone. Most people that day were in clusters along the streets and cafes, chattering and laughing, releasing the glee that they assumed wouldn't emerge again for another 5 months. Whatever glee he may have felt was buried in Nordic stoicism. I was compelled to write a short poem about this man which, along with the image, can be found in my greeting card collection.) |
