"Duluts Youts" Oil on canvas, 28" x 22" $550 (US customers only) PURCHASE INFO |
Behind Duluth's Mariners Museum (as seen in my "Marina Mates" painting) is a long concrete pier punctuated by a beautiful lighthouse. There was an odd quality to the morning fog (a common occurrence as the warmth of Lake Superior meets cool air). The morning sun was attempting to pierce through it. It was sunny and cloudy at the same time, the clouds absorbing the light and, in turn, casting a peach tone onto everything under them. Having just been on what I considered to be an unsuccessful photo shoot inside the museum, I decided to be patient and just sit on the bench at the mouth of the pier and let the images come to me. Within a few minutes, I looked down the road leading to the museum and saw a gang of bicycling teens fly through the crowd of tourists, weaving in and out of the unsuspecting pedestrians like something out of "A Clockwork Orange". As they came nearer, a couple of them peeled off the gang and deftly sped down to the end of the pier. I had my camera ready for them as they had no choice but to come back the same way. Studying this particular photo at home, I noticed that one of the kids had looked directly at me the moment I snapped the shutter. His expression cracked me up. It's the same expression we all have, sort of a grimace, after hours of mowing or some other aerobic task. The boys had no doubt been riding for quite some time, so I'm sure that's what it was all about, but looking at me with that face seemed more like an expression of contempt. Interestiiiiiing. That, in contrast to the beauty of the eerie light bathing the pier and lighthouse, propelled me to my easel. Painting this odd semi-fog and fuzzy light was definitely the technical challenge in this piece (the same issues I tried to deal with in my "Blending In" painting). I think I got pretty close, though. This piece received an Award of Excellence ribbon at the Robbin Gallery's "Extremely Minnesota" show a few years back. This image and its companion poem is also found in my greeting card collection. |
