Peavey Plaza was cluttered with warmth seekers that 70-degree November day in Minneapolis. We all need warmth in one form or another to exist and this woman, wearing a brilliant red blouse, was the posterchild for those eagerly taking it in. I had sauntered around the park for what seemed like hours, scouting for good subjects, and noticed that she hadn't moved in all of that time. Of course, I had no idea what what going on with her. Most likely she was just deep in thought about her job or her husband or child, but there was a young man sitting alone just a few feet away. Is there a story here? Body language and environmental context are crucial elements in the making of visual stories. For instance, a very close look at the foreground shows puddles of rain water with soaked cigarette stubs. It's a small thing, but the contrast of the woman's pristine appearance next to them creates a viseral world. The group of people interacting in the background provides a contrast to the lone woman. My goal as an artist is to present a human situation which may lead the viewer into familiar territory; familiar enough to write their own story. Sometimes my subjects are too vague, sometimes they're too specific, but sometimes I get it just right. When I first approach a blank canvas I most always have a plan, but the mechanics of translating those ideas into a tangible painting don't manifest easily sometimes. The moments that work, though, are what keep me going. |
