"Powderhorn by Day" Oil on canvas, 10" x 14" $400 (US customers only) PURCHASE INFO |
Minneapolis is as socio-economically diverse as any other major city. The Powderhorn neighborhood is a microcosm of that, sandwiched between the elite and the struggling. The idyllic Powderhorn Lake is the site of an annual art fair which is, in my view, one of the very best the Twin Cities has to offer. On this particular overcast day, the diffused light pooled in the canopy, casting a primary yellow beam of light onto those who stood under it. It was like something out of Star Trek: a cylindrical beam suddenly appears, transporting life forms to the surface of a strange planet. From my perspective, the pole of the canopy seemed to serve as a metaphorical barrier between the haves and have-nots. The woman on the right was straining to understand the young girl's words. To me, it represented potential; a level-playing-field opportunity (as are most cultural events). The idea of a Rockwellian cherry lemonade stand in this environment catapulted me to my easel. My only regret is that I didn't make this painting bigger. A larger scale would've enabled me to place this scene in the context of its relatively dull and darker surroundings. It also would have allowed me to more clearly represent the yellow light collecting on the skin of these three people which gave the appearance of a new species of man. I suppose I could still do that one of these days. |
