CLOSEUPS

It's difficult to see on this scale (see CLOSEUPS), but the girl is covering her mouth trying to suppress a giggle.  The young man has a "not again" look on his face (tricky to paint with his head in that position).   I guess it must've read well enough to someone, though.  The piece received a "Best of Show" award in November of 2010 at the Robbin Gallery's "Extremely Minnesota" show.  If nothing else, this piece truly is "extremely Minnesota".  The background, a taconite plant on the North Shore of Lake Superior, had been painted, collecting dust, since about 2004.  I knew I wanted a figure in the foreground and searched forever to find just the right person.  I was looking for someone youthful and colorful to contrast the dank and dingy taconite plant.  Luckily, one of my students offered to have her two teenagers pose for me.  After an hour-long photo shoot at their house, I knew I had my figures for the painting.  Oddly, I chose these figures from two separate photos, even though the kids, together, had skillfully enacted a series of improvizational, story-based poses for me.  As I printed several of the pix, the story unfolded on my desk as one photo overlapped another coincidently.  The girl was sheepishly giggling, the young man appearing disgusted with her.  It was one of those "happy little accidents". You know, after watching that background collect dust all of those years, I'll take it any way I can get it.
