This is one of those rare occasions when I had the opportunity to paint from life. (Logan is also featured in my painting called "Fret".) He, who was on summer vacation before his senior year in high school, is the grandson of my neighbor who persuaded him to pose for me. She sweetened the deal by reminding him that this was a chance to make a few bucks for his upcoming trip to Jamaica. The next thing I knew, he was in my studio, up for anything. One more year, then it was off to train as an EMT ... and adulthood. I recall my last vacation before my senior year as being exciting, but angst-filled. The overwhelming anticipation of being a senior made me want summer to be over in a hurry, but anything beyond that left me wondering, 'Do I have what it takes?'. I had asked Logan to bring objects, props, that were meaningful to him. In the "Fret" painting, he focused on his guitar, which he told me respresented "the quite of his mind". You see him on the floor with it, not playing, just deep in thought leaning on it as if it were an old pal. The other prop he brought was a stack of medical books borrowed from his mother, a working EMT. The expression and body language that emerged as I prompted him to ponder the significance of those books spoke volumes. Following in his mother's footsteps may have weighed heavily on him. The idea of committing to medical school must've seemed like a colossal undertaking. That summer was Logan's crossroad. I was lucky to have been there to record that moment in his life. |
